One of the questions that employers in Mauritius face when the country is under a class III or IV cyclone warning, is how should employees be remunerated? The answer depends on where the employees work.

  • Employers requiring physical attendance at work

Where the operational requirement of the employer’s work requires that the employees work on the employer’s premises, the employees are entitled to an allowance equivalent to three times their basic rate per hour for every hour worked.

This allowance is in addition to the remuneration due to the employees for the work performed and is payable regardless of the basic salary threshold of the employees. In addition, the employees shall be provided with an adequate free meal.

  • Employers requiring employees to work from home

Employees are entitled to not less than two times their basic rate per hour for every hour worked during normal working hours.

Employees earning a basic salary of more than MUR 50 000 per month will not be entitled to any additional remuneration unless otherwise provided in their contracts of employment.
